The Right to Dream by Eduardo Galeano

The Right to Dream: Poem written in Spanish by Eduardo Galeano. Uruguayan writer on political and economic issues and the author of Upside Down.

In 1948 and again in 1976, the United Nations proclaimed long lists of human rights, but the immense majority of humanity enjoys only the rights to see, hear and remain silent. Suppose we start by exercising the never-proclaimed right to dream? Suppose we rave a bit? Let’s set our sights beyond the abominations of today to divine another possible world:

[image, unknown] the air shall be cleansed of all poisons except those born of human fears and human passions;

in the streets, cars shall be run over by dogs;

people shall not be driven by cars, or programmed by computers, or bought by supermarkets, or watched by televisions;

the TV set shall no longer be the most important member of the family and shall be treated like an iron or a washing machine;

people shall work for a living instead of living for work;

written into law shall be the crime of stupidity, committed by those who live to have or to win, instead of living just to live like the bird that sings without knowing it and the child who plays unaware that he or she is playing;

in no country shall young men who refuse to go to war go to jail, rather only those who want to make war;

[image, unknown] economists shall not measure living standards by consumption levels or the quality of life by the quantity of things;

cooks shall not believe that lobsters love to be boiled alive;

historians shall not believe that countries love to be invaded;

politicians shall not believe that the poor love to eat promises;

earnestness shall no longer be a virtue, and no-one shall be taken seriously who can’t make fun of himself;

death and money shall lose their magical powers, and neither demise nor fortune shall make a virtuous gentleman of a rat;

no-one shall be considered a hero or a fool for doing what he believes is right instead of what serves him best;

the world shall wage war not on the poor but rather on poverty, and the arms industry shall have no alternative but to declare bankruptcy;

[image, unknown]

food shall not be a commodity nor shall communications be a business, because food and communication are human rights;

no-one shall die of hunger, because no-one shall die of overeating;

street children shall not be treated like garbage, because there shall be no street children;

[image, unknown] rich kids shall not be treated like gold, because there shall be no rich kids;

education shall not be the privilege of those who can pay;

the police shall not be the curse of those who cannot pay;

justice and liberty, Siamese twins condemned to live apart, shall meet again and be reunited, back to back;

a woman, a black woman, shall be president of Brazil, and another black woman shall be president of the United States; an Indian woman shall govern Guatemala and another Peru;

in Argentina, the crazy women of the Plaza de Mayo shall be held up as examples of mental health because they refused to forget in a time of obligatory amnesia;

the Church, holy mother, shall correct the typos on the tablet of Moses and the Sixth Commandment shall dictate the celebration of the body;

[image, unknown] the Church shall also proclaim another commandment, the one God forgot: You shall love nature, to which you belong;

clothed with forests shall be the deserts of the world and of the soul;

the despairing shall be paired and the lost shall be found, for they are the ones who despaired and lost their way from so much lonely seeking;

we shall be compatriots and contemporaries for all who have a yearning for justice and beauty, no matter where they were born or where they lived, because the borders of geography and time shall cease to exist;

perfection shall remain the boring privilege of the gods, while in our bungling, messy world every night shall be lived as if it were the last and every day as if it were the first.

A War Voted by Vested Interests

WAR IS WICKED NO MATTER WHERE, WHEN, WHY AND BY WHOM

WAR IS WICKED–be it endorsed by UN, approved by world leaders or instigated by Gaddhafi’s aggression.

World been witnessing since the past month Gaddhafi waging a war against the rebels in Libya and bombing his opponents with tanks and air raids. Thousands of innocent people have been displaced and and made refugees.

Now since the past 5  nights the Allied forces have been bombarding the regions of Gaddhafi’s stronghold. They claim that they have a ‘key role’ and there is ‘considerable progress’ in this ‘humanitarian intervention’. They claim they are not after Gadhafi , but they drop missiles on his residence in Bab Al Aziziyah, Tripoli.

In summary, one ugly aggression replaces another. War continues in the pretext of peace.

I wonder how could one imagine that the complaints civilian deaths as a result of these raids are ‘lies’ when they happen to be dropped at night time from hundreds of feet above the ground, be they precision guided.
Security Council passed the UN resolution 1973 with 10 nations voting for a yes, including the veto wielding United States, UK and France, while the remaining five-China, Brazil, Germany, India and Russia abstained. Unfortunately no one voted for a NO.

Yes the majority was in favor but that does not make war any more justified. These 15 nations did not vote out of principle but acted on their vested interests. Two wrongs don’t make one right.

The traditional Russia and China who traditionally veto most of the resolutions, preferred this time to abstain. The reason—they too have their own skeletons in the cupboard -with human rights issues in the Xinjiang, Tibet and Caucasian republics respectively.

India abstained not to displease it’s trade partners and supporters of Kashmir cause amongst the Arabs.
And no sooner the raids begin the same Russia and its premier cried, “The use of force against other countries became a steady trend in the U.S. policy,” Putin noted, adding this trend was “disturbing” and “the UN resolution “is, surely, flawed and lame…as it allows intervention in a sovereign country”.

China claims it abstained instead of hindering the resolution in solidarity with the African Union and Arab League supporting the action. What credibility should one give to the Arab League which comprises of 18 out of 22 members states with non democratic regimes and are saving their own skins by wagging their tails behind their western allies.
Secretary General Amr Moussa of Arab League now screams of “Libyan civilians at risk”. The real risk is to his prospects of contesting for presidency back home in Egypt.

African Union had been at loggerheads with Gaddhafi for their own reasons power struggle.
South Africa was amongst the 10 to have voted in favor, now its President Zuma calls for an immediate ceasefire and “rejected any foreign intervention, whatever its form”.

The other leaders of African Union Mugabe( Zimbabwe), Pohamba (Namibia) and Musoveni (Uganda) too condemn airstrike as pretext to control Libya’s oil, interfering in internal affairs and ‘might is right’ respectively.

Why were the cries for a no fly zone in oil less Somalia not heeded and why the same treatment is not met to the Bahraini King, Yemeni Premier for squashing rebellions ? We know why.

On the other side, the four nights of air raids have hardly been able to make Gaddhafi comply to the no fly zone. Gaddhafi’s aggression hasn’t stopped . He is more defiant and calls for Muslims of the world to join the crusade against the west.

I fear that this is again going the Iraq way with divisions and chaos within the country. By assisting the rebels—they are again repeating the story of assisting Mujahideen in Afghanistan.

The war may eliminate Gaddhafi but like any war, I am apprehensive, it will eliminate peace and stability too.
”The only thing the United Nations approved is a no-fly zone. That is to say that Gaddafi’s aircraft can’t bomb the rebels, but what they have done is to bomb all the way to Tripoli, and that is unacceptable,” said President Correa of Argentina.”Perhaps we didn’t learn anything from the case of Iraq? How can the human beings make the same mistakes again?”

We have seen the chaos and devastation after interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan previously. But probably the vested interests of great nations make them blind and forgetful of the recent past.

Thanks to the egocentric madness of another mad man and the voting of these 15 leading nations, the peace loving humanity will again witness more deaths in the name of war, more hatred in the name of religion and more poverty with escalating oil prices.

Says Bertrand Russel: War does not determine who is right – only who is left.

Mullah vs Dalai Lama

A couple of weeks ago Dalai Lama the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Sect of Buddhism announced his intentions to retire from his position.

Dalai Lama (Dalai meaning Ocean of wisdom; Lama means the spiritual leader) is now 75 and has been the spiritual leader since the age of two.

A recipient of the Nobel Peace prize for his non-violent efforts to liberate Tibet, he has been living in India as an exile leader for the last 52 years.
Despite half a century of struggle for an independent Tibet, one does not see in him any frustration, bitterness or helplessness and the thought of resorting to violence to liberate his homeland.

‘“If there is love, there is hope to have real families, real brotherhood, real equanimity, real peace. If the love within your mind is lost, if you continue to see other beings as enemies, then no matter how much knowledge or education you have, no matter how much material progress is made, only suffering and confusion will ensue.”

Is it not tragic that unlike him, the preachers of my faith Islam ( which also means ‘peace ‘) either justify violence verbally or endorse it by their criminal silence.

Dalai Lama believes that the “common aim of all religions, an aim that everyone must try to find, is to foster tolerance, altruism and love.”

He defends Islam and says , “has been misunderstood due to some mischievous people who happened to have an Islamic background,” referring to the September 11 “event”.

Talking on non violence at Memorial Church in Cambridge, in 2009 he said:
“Islam like any other major tradition. I think the very praising Allah means love, infinite love, compassion, like that. I understand Islam, they usually carry rosary, all 99 beads, different name of Allah, all refer compassion, or these positive things. No religion, no religious tradition say their god is full of hatred, full of anger, nobody say that. So Allah means infiniteness of love..”

And on Jehad he believes: “Jehad is not a medium of attack. There is a need to break this false notion as Jehad actually means to conquer the evil within individuals. Life is not easy and there is no guarantee, young individuals must have a vision to take it forward in a constructive manner.”

How I wish that my own clergy too saw Islam in the same light like an outsider Dalai Lama so rightly does.

Is it not ironic that a priest from a faith who’s God (Buddha) was blasted off with dynamite in Bamiyan despite international pleas against it, has no bitterness but all support for my faith and still calls Islam the Religion of Peace?

To all mankind he says:
“Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn’t anyone who doesn’t appreciate kindness and compassion. “
How I wish Mullah of my faith had even a fraction of compassion and respect for other religions or even other sects as he has.
On the China Tibet conflict he calls for The Middle-Way Approach to peacefully resolve the issue of Tibet and to bring about stability and co-existence between the Tibetan and Chinese peoples based on equality and mutual co-operation.

Is it not tragic that although Quran too mentions the Sirat Al Mustaqeem (exactly in the same spirit as the Middle Way, ), but alas, my mullahs hardly ever remember to quote this instead of the quotes on killing the blasphemers and punishing the infidels.

Dalai Lama envisions a nuclear free world and during the Nobel Laureates Summit in Hiroshima in 2008, he said:
“ I hope that the two cities be the first and last places to experience nuclear bomb, and that the world will never see another Hiroshima and Nagasaki. …. Concept of war is outdated, defeat of your enemy is no longer your victory. Destruction of your neighbour is destruction of yourself. “

Talking on Poverty, he said:
“I call upon G8 leaders and their advisers to consider and reflect upon the consequences of their thoughts, decisions and actions. Do they and will they contribute to the well-being of all human beings and the planet?”

How I wish my Mullahs too had the wide horizon and a broad outlook to see beyond their tubular visions and learned to think for the greater good of humanity.

Dalai Lama ‘s words spell nothing but love, his heart is filled with nothing but compassion and his eyes reflect nothing but hope .

My mullahs speak nothing but hatred and bigotry and they don’t even give a smile.

He is an incredible leader who wishes for himself:
May I become at all times,
Both now and for ever,
A protector for the helpless,
A guide for the lost ones,
A ship for those to cross oceans,
And a bridge to cross rivers,
A sanctuary for those in danger,
A lamp for those in darkness,
A refuge for those who need shelter,
A servant to all in need.
~ Dalai Lama

I just wish that our misguided mullah gets a fraction of the greatness and sense of Dalai Lama, that a religious leader ought to have.

Or else let these mullah give my PEACEFUL FAITH ‘back to me, which they have hijacked so ruthlessly.

Dalai Lama does a better service than our own Mullahs to make my faith be known as a ‘Religion of Peace”.

I have no qualms if I offend any mullahs by saying so.

Yes, can I have some Dalai Mullah in my faith too?

Apka wafadar,

PAKISTAN

Welcome to the LAND OF THE PURE

2 March 2011, I wake up to this news:

“The shooting to death of Pakistani Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti has once again raised questions about the country’s controversial blasphemy laws. Mr Bhatti – a Christian – was one of the country’s diminishing number of influential liberals prepared to speak out against the laws. They carry the death sentence for anyone who insults Islam, and critics say they have been used to persecute minority faiths.”

And it enrages me to say this:

Where light goes out and darkness infests
Where hatred and bigotry thrive at their best

Where hopes tumble and fear gnaws
Where barbarism rises to open its claws

Where breath constricts and throats it chokes
Where revered are satans in beards and cloaks

Where few minds shake and few souls moan
Where majority beings bear hearts of stone

Where guns are toys and innocent blood flows
Where sane die, mad thrive, as insanity grows

Where ‘secular’ ‘minorities’ are words of shame
Welcome, my friend ‘Land of the Pure’ is my name.

GEORGE YOU AIN’T ‘LEAVING’ PAKISTAN.

George Fulton is leaving said the article from Express Tribune.
He is divorcing Pakistan but with a heavy heart, he wrote.

Heyy George,

Whatever the circumstances of the relationship had been –dysfunctional or frustrating – you may be divorcing Pakistan, but you will never be able to ‘leave’ Pakistan.

Who says you can ‘leave’ Pakistan.?

Once you cross any one’s path be it your ‘dame’ Pakistan, you take a ‘bit’ of her with you, which shall be a ‘little’ part of you, for the rest of your life.

Yes George, no matter how many times you pronounce the word Talaq, you will not be able leave her. She will live in your memories, in your day to day life. She may not haunt you or stalk you, but she will definitely be a ‘part’ of you.

You came Pakistan’s way and cared to stay on for some time. But perhaps Pakistan didn’t care back in return.

Today like millions of us, you have expressed your valid fears of her extremism getting more extreme and her being a failed woman .

The evil side of this woman called Pakistan , who pushed you to a corner to leave must be rejoicing today. Once again like in Benazir’s assassination, Taseer’s ghastly murder, or countless suicide bombs, today again, the extremist wicked witch in Pakistan has won over.

I do not perceive you by the color of your skin. The day you tied the knot with the green passport, you became a Pakistani. I take you as one of us. Each one of us who thinks and is brave to embrace Pakistan with love and care is a George.

We have millions  of Georges in Pakistan. Georges who think and feel the same as you.

All these Georges too feel hurt and bitter because of nepotism, corruption, extremist, ignorance and communal hatred. But perhaps they do not have the privilege like you to leave.

Please support all these Georges who are left behind and strengthen their dreams, desires and aspirations to tame this dame of yours.

Yes, you will leave, but then this dame needs to know her place and learn to behave. And the anger that you have caused in all these Georges will see that she is shown how to behave like a civilised woman. We will not let her ruin any more Georges.

But George, why should you care for the reciprocity if you really cared for her

Many a virtues in life need reciprocation –like friendship, trust, fidelity. But when it comes to care and love —it is generally one sided and may be reciprocated but not necessarily with the same intensity.

The real test is to be with your loved one in the time of need. She may be dysfunctional, for she is going through a bad patch. She isn’t all bad and only bad.
Like all of us, she has her soft side too. This softie is definitely going to miss you.

And today she is pensive, helpless. She is crying loud and hard to be saved.

You may not stay with her, but you may still support her with your affection and care.

I am neither  judging you nor  stopping you. But please don’t stop caring for her, even if she ceases to be your beloved.

I do not blame your decision or your bitterness. Only those who care get bitter. But with time your bitterness shall wane and all you will remember is the pleasant days you spent with her.

Please join hands with all of those forces who shall make this woman virtuous again. Difficult times come in the lives of all nations–new and old. And history has witnessed people coming out of worse  times –whether the Nazi hatred of Jews, Opium addiction in China or the dark ages of Europe.

With all the wonderful Georges fighting for her  recovery from the ailments of ignorance and hatred shall ensure that one day the compassionate  and loving Pakistan shall triumph over  the wicked and hostile Pakistan.

Hate and hostility have no feet in front of love and compassion.And they shall triumph in Pakistan too.

And I am so sure a day will come in our life time when you shall be proud that you came Pakistan’s way.

Please lend your hand to  those who strive for this,  in whatever way you can. Distances do not matter, if the intentions are good.

Keep her in your good will and prayers.

Please don’t stop caring for her.

She still needs you, George.

Yes she needs you.

She needs you.

For sure.

AN ISSUE THAT DOESNT CAPTURE MY HEART

For once for some reasons best  known to me, Raymond Davis issue has failed to catch the appeal of my heart. Just that I know the basic outline of who he is, what he did, where and when and what hue and cry this incident has stirred.I am neither following it nor worried about it’s outcome. I know it has caused a huge furore and taken up the majority of the broadcasting time of the TV channels, and even  costed a PPP stalwart his ministry and probably his political career in PPP.

But I still remain unstirred, unmoved.

Is it because I am fed up of the politics and the  ever changing focus of issues in Pakistan?

Or is it because I am consumed by the happening in Libya, a far flung place, which fascinates me more?

Or is it because I want to keep all my energies reserved for the World Cup Cricket?

No fortunately it is none of these.

The main reason is, I am afraid to reveal, will make me look  cynical and irresponsible. But whatever any one may  think, I feel this event does not deserve all that attention it is getting at the cost of other more important issues.

With due respect to all the blogs, tweets, FB statuses obsessed with Raymond Davis, I have made none except for this off hand blog. And not to mention all those print and elctronic media  who are using up majority  of their print space and broadcasting hours on the issue.  However I do not mean to judge either them or others  those who have been dedicating their energies and time thinking and talking about this  issue. May be they see the angle or twist in the case which I fail to get.

I would rather consume myself up on issues which make a difference to the common man like education, poverty, ignorance, reducing maternal and child mortality. For me it is nothing but a waste of time and energy to harp over who is Raymond Davis, whether he has diplomatic immunity and  what should be his fate in  a poor country like ours. Let the foreign office or the concerned officials or the judiciary  deal with his case, instead of the media, civil society and the common man.

I may be absolutely wrong or gone insane, in the eyes of the emotional Pakistanis, but this is what my calculated guess about this issue is.

Is this the first time we have a CIA agent operating and carrying out his agenda on this Earth?

I have been hearing of CIA doing this and doing that ever since I learned to recite ABC.

Thousands  of agents must  have come to this land and accomplished their mission and gone under cover. Even those who get killed get a ‘nameless place’ in their Memorial Wall of Fallen CIA Agents in the CIA headquarters in Langley Virgina.

No one gets to know who they were or what they did, not  even their families.

The situation with Raymond Davis is that for some stupidity of his, he got caught and couldn’t escape–hence all this exposure of a CIA operative in Pakistan. And hence all this screaming from every nook and corner of Pakistan.

What will happen to his fate, I know not.
But whatever happens to him–extradited or punished or whatever, will not make any difference in the long run.

And even if we imagine the extreme scenario that his native land admits  wrong doing, is it going to make even an iota of a difference to the poor man who fails to get two square meals a day, or that woman who has no rights within her four walls or outside, the child who does get the balanced diet  to escape from malnutrition right from the word ‘go’ in his life.

Many more Raymond Davis’s  will come and go this way without being caught, exactly the way they come and go elsewhere in the world.

Rightly or wrongly this is what every country does against those who’s interest clash with theirs. We do too and we too get caught once in a while.  But does that  stop us ?

After this incident one firmly comes to believe that Ignorance is ‘really’ a bliss.

Only we had remained ignorant of this nth CIA operative on our land, we would have been so much at peace and worry about more worthy of attention issues.

Lastly, what do we do of those CIA agents who are hired locally and live amongst us ?

GADDHAFI YOU WERENT LIKE THIS, HAVE YOU CHANGED ?

Sixth day into the turmoil in Libya, with Benghazi and Triopoli burning and hundreds are dead.
“Power not for one day, two days but for 42 years. He  almost started to believe that he  owned Libya.” claim people.

Yes, it is  believable that power corrupts.

Yes, Gaddhafi Sir, you have been in power since 1969  and has it corrupted you too. when you as a  handsome, brave revolutionary with Nasser and Che as your  heroes came to power in Libya,  you wowed to bring a change. You had Ortega, Chavez and Mandela as your best friends.

And in the times when women rolled in the black abayas like the sacks of coal, you did take them out of it. You did bring them into the army. You did make them your personal guards.You did make them pilots, architects, engineers and policewomen.

You made the Libyans living in dark ages get education from 20% to 85 %.

You made the people selfsufficient of food. God gave Libya  black gold, you gave the Libyans blue gold.
Yes the power with which you have done these ruthless things, it has corrupted you.

People accused you of being a debauch or a womanizer. But I did not believe a word of what propaganda the west did against you. I thought they were jealous of your smart Libyan  girls. If you had kept them in Harems like your other colleagues in the region, you wouldn’t be called a womaniser.

You talked of Pan Arab Unity on the lines of Gamal Abdul Nasser. You became the passionate voice of the African Union. You were the ‘best friend ‘of Nelson Mandela in his own words.
Your Green Book  ideology spoke of Socialism and merged it with the moderate Islamic values. You made the bitter word ‘socailism’ palatable to the Muslims.  Yes by  talking of Palestine, Socialism, Unity you have committed offense, a real offense.

As a teenager, I considered you as a Hero. I found you handsome. They said you had a million dollar smile. And I agreed to that too.

As a student activist I even attended, in my youth ,  your International Youth Conference in Tripoli in September 1986. Your youth at that time was so inspired by your work and chanted slogans and songs in love for you.   Some guys back then  did hint that you got  angry at those who did not agree with you. But they said, you were fair too, to each one of the Libyans.
My respect for you increased many folds  when your tent house was ruthlessly bombed by the Americans in April 1986, and your darling baby girl you had adopted from an orphange, had died. Did the world not see that. But why would they remember it now?

You were amongst  the few, who openly and honestly supported the cause of Palestinian Liberation, when others like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, other Gulf monarchies were busy doing lip service and actually obeying the west.

Youth is an age of idealism. But is it that with age you changed ?

As one grows older one faces realities of life and one becomes selfish.
Has the same thing happened to you ?

Sometimes I wonder what”s wrong ?

First time I got disappointed was when you returned all the nuclear enrichment stuff voluntarily in return to appeasement from the West.  Has the revolutionary in you died ?

But still whatever crap the Westrn media or CIA used to talk about you, I never believed and knew it was to defame you.
Or is it as people say,  I am too enamoured by you, being unreasonably naive to believe in your ‘good intentions’.

They say what is  happening now is no  propaganda. It is all in black and white, having had 200 dead in 6 days just because you dont like their demand of democracy.

As the protests grew, texts were sent out over the Libyan mobile network urging “nationalist youths to defend the country’s national symbols.”

Translation of it by the vested interests ” Gaddafi wants thugs to deal with the protestors. This has led to more chaos and civilian deaths. Civilians have been killed at funerals, which just leads to more funerals. Tanks have run people over. Snipers shoot from rooftops and helicopters. There have been reports of machine guns and mercenaries, too.”

You better stop your westernised son to stop threatening the people you loved for all these years. He is so arrogant and heartless.  He has no idea how hard you worked to make Libya a modern and a moderate state. If I could I would have strangulated him by now, for  the way he was talking on TV and threatening the innocent people  with dire consequences. At least give that  ‘thug’ a hard punch from my side.

And then those tweets about “Gaddafi ordered mercenaries to rape Libyan women”

No, I dont believe it. I know you can’t do that. You had so much love and respect for women. I know this from the days I met you as a teenager.

I know this is a blatant lie.
