Welcome to the LAND OF THE PURE

2 March 2011, I wake up to this news:

“The shooting to death of Pakistani Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti has once again raised questions about the country’s controversial blasphemy laws. Mr Bhatti – a Christian – was one of the country’s diminishing number of influential liberals prepared to speak out against the laws. They carry the death sentence for anyone who insults Islam, and critics say they have been used to persecute minority faiths.”

And it enrages me to say this:

Where light goes out and darkness infests
Where hatred and bigotry thrive at their best

Where hopes tumble and fear gnaws
Where barbarism rises to open its claws

Where breath constricts and throats it chokes
Where revered are satans in beards and cloaks

Where few minds shake and few souls moan
Where majority beings bear hearts of stone

Where guns are toys and innocent blood flows
Where sane die, mad thrive, as insanity grows

Where ‘secular’ ‘minorities’ are words of shame
Welcome, my friend ‘Land of the Pure’ is my name.

The Impatient Secularist’s Guide to Islam (via Said Simon)

This is what a non-muslim blogger, a student of Political Science and a secular humanist had to say about Islam.

The Impatient Secularist's Guide to Islam Islam is a confusing religion to a lot of people. After all, it’s foreign and stuff. So I thought I’d help clear up some of that confusion for you, my secularist pals who are mostly familiar only with Christianity. I’m only going to bother telling you what I think is relevant to what are likely to be your interests, so don’t think this is comprehensive. Some of these will seem like obvious statements, but bear with me because I like to be thoroug … Read More

Translation by Tagore (1915):

The Swan Will Fly Away All Alone,
Spectacle of the World Will Be a Mere Fair
As the Leaf Falls from the Tree
Is Difficult to Find
Who Knows Where it Will Fall
Once it is Struck with a Gust Of Wind
When Life Span is Complete
Then Listening to Orders,
ollowing Others,
Will Be Over
The Messengers of Yama are Very Strong
It’s an Entanglement with the Yama
Servant Kabir Praises the Attributes of the Lord
He Finds the Lord Soon
Guru Will Go According to His Doings
The Disciple According to His

Explanation

Here Swan represents our free-spirit that continues to live beyond the death of the body. When the physical death comes, the “less-constrained” life leaves every worldly thing behind (including the body) and the whole spectacle of the world is like a fair or carnival that we witness and now know its true transient nature.

Kabir reminds us that we are much like a leaf if when severed from the universal spirit (the tree) is liable to be blown away by the gust of unfulfilled desires. In such a state it is difficult to predict where the leaf (spirit) will finally land on getting dismembered from the tree of universal oneness.

All through our physical life we are listening to either orders of others or are ordered by our own desires. When death comes nobody is really with us and we finally realize that the obeying and following others is not as meaningful as following our inner voice. “Kala” (Yama) or time, is relentless even in the wake of our last-minute realizations and feeling unfulfilled.

Finally Kabir reinforces that a continuous dedication to God yields instantaneous results. But warns that its our own effort that bear fruits and everybody (both Guru and Disciple) progresses according to their own actions.

ZEN KOANS, KABIR AND MYSTICISM

Prologue: Expressing my thoughts through writing had never ever been a difficult job for me, before embarking on this topic. Several times I abandoned the idea of completing this note but then repeatedly kept returning to it as if out of compulsion.

The concept of Zen Koans is a difficult one for those who shall read it for the first time but I suggest you to ‘go slow’ and take in small doses at a time.Over several readings it becomes intoxicating and literally a way of life.

Well in advance, I beg to apologise to those who might find some of the concepts outrageous, maybe not subscribing to their frame of thoughts or even might hurt their religious sensibilities. I sincerely register my apologies to them and make it clear that this is purely my feeble understanding of the concept of Zen Koans and I found it intriguing after having read about it some months ago.
OF ALL YOU KNOW, YOU MIGHT FIND MY CONCEPTS ABSOLUTELY FLAWED AND RIDICULOUS. Never mind if that is the case.

ZEN is one of the schools of Buddhism—The Mahayana (the other being Hinayana))where the Chinese, Japanese and Indian concepts of Meditational states merge.

Meditation in :
Japanese is called ZEN
In Chinese it is Chan
And in Sanskrit it is termed as Dhyaana.

Zen stresses on the cognitive acuity ( in simple words- ‘understanding’) called ’ PRAGYA’ to attain enlightenment or in simple words to attain the realisation of a‘superior power’ or who we call God. It calls for the self realisation of God through meditation as opposed to and rather rejecting the steroetypical beliefs based on our worldly, logical reasoning.

Zen promotes a very different way of understanding and dealing with reality. One of the most baffling aspects of Zen is the practice of Koans.

Koans are a teaching tool used to break down the barriers to enlightenment. To put it in simple words it is the actual teaching of the concept of Zen to the disciples by their masters, using simple examples.

Koan literarily translated means “A public document”. It refers to a statement made by a Master to a student of Zen or a discussion or dialogue between Master and the student. The purpose of a Koan is to open the mind and perception to the truth. Koans are questions or riddles designed as instruments by the Zen Master to aid the student in finding the truth behind the everyday images of reality.
Koans are not rational questions with final linear conclusions. They are especially designed for one purpose; this purpose is to open the mind that has been closed by habitual responses to the world and reality.

To put it in simple words—
Our perception of the world is clouded by:
Firstly, the habitual responses that we are taught by our surroundings in the society
Secondly, by the habit forming creation of our own selves

In everyday life and through societal learning , we develop ideas about reality and possibilities that are well endorsed by our peers. We accept these “laws” as irrefutable and immutable because of its certification by our society.
For example, scientific authorities state that there is a law of gravity and that time is linear and proceeds form one second to the next. These “truths” are supported , cemented and bolstered by our society, our parents, our teachers, our education, by our peers and even by our common sense until they become unquestionable facts.
This also applies to our ideas of human personality and of ourselves. At the same time we apply the same human attributes to God too.

NOW KABIR AND ITS COMPARISON WITH ZEN PHILOSPHY

Kabir, the weaver.

Kabir is a master of Zen way of thinking using extremely simple examples and words—which appealed to the average minds of his time.

Being a common man himself—a weaver who sat amongst the simple minds he had to resort to these simple words in order to explain the concept of higher discernment or higher wisdom.

Here are the three Dohas touching the ‘out of the box’ thinking i.e. the Zen way of thinking:

Fisrt two being the classical, and the third only to some extent.

Ek Kahun To Hai Nahin, Do Kahun To Gaari
Hai Jaisa Taisa Rahe, Kahe Kabir Bichari

Translation:
If I say one, It is not If I say two, it will be a violation
Let ‘It’ be what ‘It’ issays Kabir upon contemplation

Explanation:
A classical Doha with an illustration of Kabir mysticism that parallels the Zen Koans.
Kabir here is alluding to the futility of describing the cosmic experience. In that vein, he underscores the limited vision of both the Advaitic (one God) and Dvaitic(God is separate from the devotee) schools of thought. He says that the final experience is what it is and cannot be cast into any thought, words or description. A first-hand direct experience is the only way of knowing. And when that happens all else becomes literally irrelevant.

Aag Jo Lagi Samand Mein, Dhuan Na Pargat Hoye –
So Jane Jo Jarmua, Jaki Lagi Hoye

Translation:
With the ocean set ablaze – The smoke yet manifests not
Only the one who gets burnt – Envisions the heat of loving thought

Explaination:
This Doha by Kabir is again a superb example of mystic poetry where in two lines, Kabir is able to project the agony and the ecstasy of true love and devotion.
The agony and turmoil in the heart of a devotee, is symbolically shown in this Doha as the flame that is burning the ocean. Yet none knows or can know about this pain because the “smoke” is not visible! Only the one who is suffering the separation from one’s lord can understand the force of such a fire.
Kabir, in this Doha depicts the agony that a devotee feels for his Lord , or in our normal day to day life, a person feels for the loved one. To others, the intensity, the pain of separation is not comprehensible for this too is precious and abstract for the devotees to explain and reveal. It is but a private affair!
Simply saying: Don’t they say, only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches!!

Kabir Soota Kya Kare, Koore Kaaj Niwaar
Jis Panthu Tu Chaalna, Soyee Panth Samwaar

Translation:
Arise from slumber O Kabir, divest yourself of the rubbish deeds
Be focused and illumine the path on which you were meant to tread

Explaination:
Here slumber refers to a state of daze and fixation on what is perceived by the senses. Sleep is no different from the normal waking state in that it engages our senses completely. Both are essentially of the same intrinsic nature where mind is the central player. Kabir recognizes the futility of mental and physical worlds and categorizes everything in these domains as “rubbish”. He then urges us to focus ourselves on finding our true spiritual root – putting an end to the cyclical realities that have kept us engaged thus far.

TED TALK ON KABIR by Shabnam Virmani

Shabnam Virmani is a filmmaker and artist in residence at the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore, India.

7 years ago she started travelling with folk singers in Malwa, Rajasthan and Pakistan in a quest for the spiritual and socio-political resonances of the 15th century mystic poet Kabir in our contemporary worlds. Among the tangible outcomes of these journeys were a series of 4 musical documentary films, several music CDs and books of the poetry in translation (www.kabirproject.org).

Inspired by the inclusive spirit of folk music, she has begun to play the tambura and sing folk songs of Kabir herself. Currently she is working on co-creating a web-museum of Kabir poetry & music with folk singer communities in India and developing ideas for taking mystic poetry and folk music to school classrooms.

She continues to journey to new areas such as Kutch, Gujarat and draw inspiration not only from Kabir, but also other mystic poets of the sub-continent and the oral folk traditions that carry them to us. Her earlier work consisted of several video and radio programs created in close partnership with grassroots women’s groups in India.

IS IT A BLASPHEMY LAW OR A BLACKMAILING LAW

Here comes another case of blasphemy . The heat of the previous ridiculous case of Asia Bibi’s blasphemy allegations had not cooled, that this new, a far more ridiculous and a lot more shameful case crops up. My head hangs in shame. Are we going insane or paranoid or simply treading towards a deliberate path of self annihilation? I seriously feel embarrassed to step out of my house today and to face yet another barrage of questions from the concerned friends about what’s wrong with us muslims. Now many of them wouldn’t even spell out the question, just stare at me with those questioning eyes, as if all my previous explanations of the ‘misguided few’ amongst us was indeed a fassade. I wonder how will I look into the eyes of my friends the next time their gaze meets mine. Will my eyes be again able to narrate the same words of ‘ignorant minority’ with the same strength and conviction as I have been doing since the time I can remember. How long will they take one ridiculous story after the other, as just an isolated incident? True, there are indeed only the “misguided few”, but arent these misguided few getting a bit very many, as the time goes by. With the educated medical rep—a graduate at least- we cant even say he was a “misguided mullah” or “an illiterate ignorant soul”. Aren’t we literally ‘lettered illiterates’? I think we really need to undergo a “Mini Mental Exam” (MME), as a community as a whole, to reach to the diagnosis of this pathology. Are we insane or on the verge of insanity —a Paranoid Schizophrenics , or are we malingerers who fake pathology to gain personal benefits—termed Munchaussen Syndrome? With either of these diagnoses— we shall be labelled mentally unwell (saying it politely). And do we at all know the simple Third Law of Newton:” To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” ? As of today, any news from Pakistan reaches the rest of the world at the speed of light. Just yesterday, while reading an article on blasphemy in a major international newpaper online, the comments at the end were really heart shattering. As we sow so shall we reap. Will we be in a position to blame the reaction of the outside world or face their wrath if we carry on with this insanity any further? For those who don’t buy my concerns, I copy paste some of those comments, with a heavy heart: Johnny Walker Whiskey is the biggest import into Pakistan, any day of the week each of the Pakistani International airports – of Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore- has several cargo planes laden with alcohol beverages discharging its cargo. The country is controlled by gangsters politically and they in turn pass on the duty of instilling religon into the people to the Mullah Whiskies who control the great unwashed masses with their manipulated pagan interpretation of Islam declaring anyone who questions their authority as a blasphemous Kafar ! By the way this is a ridiculous situation and waste of everyone’s time. I doubt if anyone in Pakistan is actually taking this seriously. Sadly, there are words. Words like why do we continue to accept the unacceptable when it comes to the activities of muslims and muslim countries? We accept it by continually pussyfooting around muslim sensibilities (maybe this is an oxymoron). Why should Ms May be considering a banning order against an American who wishes to visit the UK just because he theatened to burn a silly book – because she is pussyfooting around muslim sensibilities. It is time we get the blasphemy law against christian beliefs too. It’s not just Pakistan. Pew Poll: Majority of Muslims supports death for anyone leaving Islam. In a new poll by Pew, a majority of Muslims in many of the world’s Islamic countries says they are very much in favor of killing any person who converts from Islam to any other religion. The new poll also exposed mainstream Muslim attitudes regarding other aspects of their life. For instance, the poll found that a majority in the Muslim world are in favor of cutting off hands for theft, stoning people to death for adultery, and insisting that Islam play a major role in politics. This recent Pew poll was conducted over the course of a month and asked Muslims in several countries about what was going on in their heads. Many of the respondents were also questioned face to face. http://www.examiner.com/american-politics-in-vancouver/pew-poll-majority-of-muslims-support-death-for-anyone-leaving-islam PAKISTAN, AS THE US PRESIDENT OBAMA, SAID IS A CANCER ON THE BODY OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY. THE US, UK. EU, JAPAN AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS SHOULD NOT FEED IT WITH MONEY AND WEAPONS, UNLESS PAKISTAN DESTROYS ALLTERRORIST CELLS, BASES ETC IN ALL AREAS CONTROLLED BY PAKISTAN AND GET RID OF ITS LAWS THAT DISCRIMINAATE AGAINST CHRISTIANS, SIKHS, HINDUS AND ISLAMIC MINORITIES SUCH AS AHMEDIS, SHIA ETC. AS PAKISTAN IS THE EPIC CENTRE OF BOTH GLOBAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM AND NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION, THE US MUST TAKE EFFECTIVE ACTIONS AGAINST PAKISTAN AND THREATEN IT TO BE DECLARED A STATE SPONSORING TERRORISM, UNLESS PAKISTAN COOPERATES. This is written hatred . Many of us do and will again face verbal hate on streets, in the subway, in the malls or even at our own doorstep. And then many many more will simply feel the hateful vibes quietly. How long can we go on pleading our case to the outside world? Instead of Dr Valiyani, it is the medical rep who needs to be charged with blaphemy for” misusing and defaming” the sacred name Muhammed for settling his personal vandetta. The guns should be totted at him for blasphemy—for turning the sacred name Muhammed into a butt of joke. It is time we need to turn our guns towards ourselves and no matter what, stand up and take back our ‘Islam’ held hostage into the hands of the handful “misguided and ignorant” Mullahs. To correct myself—indeed it isn’t they who are the misguided or the ignorant—they know what they pursue for their personal agendas. It is us, the silent majority who are “the misguided and ignorant”. It is time for a commando action against the hostage takers. It is time to stand up in one voice. Enough is enough. Please think. And act… Ilmana Fasih 13 December 2010 References: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/pakistani-doctor-held-under-blasphemy-law-2158702.html http://tribune.com.pk/story/89180/doctor-arrested-on-blasphemy-charges/

SHAYAD KHATM YE FAASLE HO JAYENGE

Armaan Khan bhai again writes with his soul.
Let me do the explaining. This kavita (poem) is in context with the much awaited Court ruling on Ayodhya-Babri Masjid controversy.Any time this issue comes to limelight, a visible tension crops up among the two communities, who have essentially been living side by side for centuries.
I hope each word of this poem reflects the feelings of each one in India and extends to ‘us’ across the ‘border ke us paar too.’ 🙂
Shayad khatm ye faasle ho jaayenge,Jab hamare beech faisle ho jayenge.
Ayodhya bhi sukoon se ho jayegi, hum tum ache bhale ho jayenge.
Ab badgumaniyan bhi mit jayengi, door sab shikwe gile ho jayenge.
Haathon se nahin dil se milenge to, dil se dil marhale ho jayenge.
Nafrat dhoondne se bhi na milegi, mohabbat ke silsile ho jayenge.
—- Armaan Khan
In reply, Ibrahim Shishmahal says:
Dil mil sakein subhi kay, kuch aisaa payaam de
Nufrat na ho kahin pe, sukun subho shaam de
Pur amn ho watun, kahin dehshut na ho zara
Meri dua ye ‘Faisla’, khushiyan tamaam de!!
And Amit adds:
main na himdu na musalman mujhe jeene do..
dosti hai mera emaan mujhe jeene do…

DEENI BYAPAAR

This is in reference to the religious extremists who believe in controlling the people through the fear psychosis:

Ye jo deen ke thekedaar hain
Mazhab inka byapaar hai
Munafe bakhsh ye kaarobaar hai
Mukalama inse bekaar hai
Hukoomat bhi laachaar hai
Shayad Khuda bhi inse bezaar hai
.
Jo fatwe jaari karte hain
Aur khauf sa tari rakhte hain
Masoom qaum ke seene mein
Kya rakha aise jeene mein
Hum zinda ho ke bhi marte hain
Bas azab azab se darte hain
Ye jeena maut se badtar hai
Is zillat se to maut hi behtar hai.
