Treetops vs Grass roots

While reading through the wonderful, insightful Pullitzer Prize winner book Half The Sky, which highlights countless issues related to women all over the globe, one is enlightened of the dynamics of factors which can bring a real change in the lives of women in the world.

Whether it is reduction in maternal mortality, girl trafficking, change in social customs like female genital mutilation or women abuse the change can come only from within. And the secret to that change is ‘girl child education’.

Girl education is the key to women empowerment. Women empowerment in turn is the key to eradicate poverty.

Educating girls is the most effective way to fight poverty. Until women are numerate and literate it is difficult to bring meaningful change and contribute in the country’s economy”, say the authors.

Despite multiple factors playing their roles, studies have shown that, the solution to reduction in population growth, trafficking of women, gender based violence or female genital mutilation is SINGLE and it is girl education.

The local customs, culture, and family dynamics and the various factors which hinder the change need to be well understood . Bringing about a difference entails persistence and perseverance to bring slow and steady change and creating receptive audience at the grassroots level. Innovative ways may be needed to cause that change in thinking before one expects a change in practice.

The roadblocks may not necessarily be just the ‘big’ factors –but even trivial issues which we do not even give a second thought.

And motivation of girls is never an issue. They are always willing. It is the circumstances and the people around them who need to be convinced.

The authors recount, based on research, four cost effective ways to increase school attendance in either genders—
• ‘deworming’ the children( as worm infestation affects physical and intellectual growth),
managing menstruation related issues( providing san napkins and toilets—as many girls don’t attend school during mens due to inconvenience),
• providing Iodised salt( as many communities suffer from Iodine deficiency which leads to brain damage) and
• ‘bribing’ ( providing financial incentives to the girl students for attending school.

The donors often assume that providing the infrastructure, like building schools, or giving books is the ‘way to increase’ educaton. But one may have to go extra mile(s) to ensure that the real purpose behind the building of schools is realised.

The World Bank ,too, points that excessive spending on education bureaucracy and school infrastructure, rather than on teaching staff and supplies, undermines the quality and quantity of schooling.

How to boost up the woman empowerment through education ?

For many of us first thing that occurs is ‘funding’–specifically foreign funding.

It remains a myth that in places with poor resources and conditions the foreign assistance or Aid through big agencies like UN, USAID, US govt.etc.(Treetop solution) is the key to any kind of development.

Rightly did the authors point out that Foreign Aid follows ‘Murphy’s Law’ ( the law states that anything that can go wrong shall go wrong).

The foreign aid may be well intentioned but it does not always work the way it is intended. Some prove to do the exact opposite of what is intended.

Many skeptics like, Peter Bauer and Milton Friedman argued point blank in the 1960s that aid is ineffective.
William Easterly with experience in WB says, aid is often wasted and sometimes does more harm than good.
Rajan and Raghuram published a study in The Review of Eco and Stats that : there is no positive or negative correlation between aid inflows and economic development of a country.

The literature on foreign aid and development strongly suggests that the usefulness of development assistance varies with the quality of a country’s governance and the economic policies it pursues. In countries whose policy environment is highly unfavorable to growth, aid is less likely to be productive and contribute to long-term development.

According to one group of scholars, “in terms of growth prospects and performance, no amount of foreign assistance can substitute for a developing country’s internal policies and incentives for increasing output and improving the efficiency of resource allocation.”

A wonderful example that the book gives of a failed purpose of the Aid is as follows:

A UN Project in Nigeria meant to empower women.
Fact: the women in Nigeria cultivate cassava ( a root like potato) and use it for the household. If in excess they sell it off and save the money and spend it on home and their children.
The Project: It introduced a variety of Cassava which would give three tons per hectare yield instead of the usual 800 kilos per hectare. They had a terrific harvest. But they had problems;
They could not harvest that bulk of the yeild and could not even have the capacity to process them.
The agency introduced processing equipment. But the fruit was bitter and did not taste as well. But with processing of the fruit the problem was dealt.
As a result the project looked a ‘great success’. The women started to earn good money.
But then the men came in and kicked women out of Cassava farming. Why?
Because as per the tradition the women raised staple crops and the men grew cash crops. And when men had extra earnings, they used it for beer. As a result, women had even less income that when they started.

Moral of the story:
The above case proves the futility of a well intentioned Aid, if it is not linked to the local cultural practices. And another point it highlights is that any sort of empowerment of woman can boomrang unless it is accompanied by women education.

Sometimes good intentioned ‘treetop’ efforts can be counterproductive if the ‘grass root’ realities and resources are not taken into consideration.

Obama Osama Heart to Heart

Obama: I loved the way ISI let you stay nearby.

Osama: Yeah, to catch me, they didn’t even try.

Obama: No wonder why, now they feel so shy.

Osama: Say they didn’t know it. Oh what a lie !

Obama: They thought you were, in Afghan mountains high.

Osama: Sure I would if AZ wasn’t a bigger idiot than Karzai.

Obama: Ofcourse who doesn’t know him? That 10% guy.

Osama: He aint so bad. Pasha brought his salams whenever passing by.

Obama: After we nabbed you, did you bid your host goodbye?

Osama: Knowing I’ll be with 72 virgins, “I wanna come too” he began to cry.

Obama: Gosh! You’ll have Seventy two, after all those killings? You lucky guy.

Osama: Huhh and you fools thought t’was for Jehad, those suicide bombers die !

Obama: We killed many in Iraq too. For a place in Heaven, can I also try?

Obama, You’re born Lucky !

With the operation accomplished to nab Osama Bin Laden, it isn’t unusual at all that no soon the news was out, conspiracy theories started cropping up. Every Tom Dick and Harry becomes Sherlock Holmes with describing flaws into the details of the operation, about the photograph not being his (the hair being darker than his,), his face not resembling, that he was brought here and declared dead to enter Pakistan( as if they haven’t already), or that Pakistani intelligence did it all and then Americans took the credit. As many mouths, as many stories…
Being an anti conspiracy theorist and a true fan of a lucky man called Obama, I believed every word of what Obama said in his address. I know Obama must be as desperate as anyone in this position to increase his popularity ratings for the next term. But just to say that he will stage a false drama and tell such a huge lie to achieve those, I doubt.
Yes, luck has failed him in his fiscal policies or in getting his health plan implemented but he just hit a huge luck home run as Commander-in-Chief.
I may be unrealistic in taking his words for truth, because I continue to be as fascinated by this brilliant man as I was when I first noticed him during the Presidential campaign.
With Bush’s doubtful mental abilities, who wasn’t even sure of who was the current Prime Minister of India during his election, Obama’s brilliance and thorough knowledge about the world was such a striking contrast. He definitely was a presidential material. And then to be a lucky first man of color to become an American president—it was not just me but the whole world found him mesmerizing. Lucky was he to be a blue eyed of the entire globe.
Knowing the details of his parentage—being multiracial—Dad from Kenya, Mom a white American, step Dad an Indonesian, Grandmom a practicing Muslim, he sure was born lucky—to have lived in various cultures.. A man exposed to so many cultures, religions and travelled widely in childhood ( including Pakistan)—had to be a man with wide horizons and huge luck.
And after all, to have gone to Harvard for the graduate studies, being president of the Harvard Law Review and tenure as a constitutional law professor were no small luck to be so brilliant.
On hearing his live Presidential address – extempore, flawless, no stuttering, no forgetting, no written paper and the substance that he spoke for almost 45 minutes, I was all head over heals for his oratory.
Obama got a Nobel Peace Prize with no substantial achievements. In his thank you speech, in a very matter of fact way, he mentioned his surprise on being chosen for it and remarked that there were others who deserved to get this prize more than him. Yes he was less deserving but got it for he was luckier.
His occasional acknowledgement of having ‘Muslim relatives’ is too an act no less brave considering how he was maligned for having a Muslim name or Muslim roots during the campaign. Not just lucky, he’s brave too.
Just a couple of days ago he cornered Donald Trump with humour. The president poked fun at his birther theory and his background on the celebrity apprentice at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. The humour rolled the audience into fits of laughter.

In a fundraiser dinner in New York looked more like a stand up comedian than a President of USA
“My name is Barack Obama.I was born in Hawaii,” he continued, which elicited cheers and applause from the audience of supporters, “the 50th state of the United States of America.”
“No one checked my ID on the way in,” he said. “But just in case …” Obama added and reached into his breast pocket before pulling his empty hand out and chuckling.
The lady luck gave him an excellent sense of humour too..
And now the credit of nabbing the world’s most wanted criminal. Bush tried his best, lied about weapons of mass destruction in a desperate attempt to prove his credibility, got shoed, but still failed to catch Osama.
And this brilliant and lucky man—got him quietly in a small operation with minimal collateral damage, and personally supervised it through camera. And no matter what anyone may claim, he got it done with such neatness deep inside Pakistan, leaving the Pakistani officials speechless, faceless and spineless.
Lucky you are Obama. History will go down with you getting the Osama Credit. And probably you will win the second term too.
What else is mother luck bringing for him in future? A fan in me awaits.
I know I may be unduly fascinated by this lucky man, whom many find an unsuccessful president.
And of course, lastly, you are lucky to have me as your ardent fan, you lucky Obama !

Get Up Stand Up Dont Give Up the Fight

Labor Day (aka International Worker’s Day) is celebrated on May 1 in countries around the world, and it is often a day for protests and rallies by Labour Unions.

This originates with the United States labor movement in the late 19th Century. Working conditions were severe and it was quite common to work 10 to 16 hour days in unsafe conditions. Death and injury were commonplace at many work places.
Demands for an eight-hour working day was becaming increasingly widespread among American laborers.

Thousands of men, women and children were dying needlessly every year in the workplace, with life expectancy as low as their early twenties in some industries, and little hope but death of rising out of their destitution. Socialism, calling for the rights of the workers, offered an attractive option.

ORIGINS:

A demonstration, largely staged by a small group of workers, caused a crowd of some 1,500 people to gather at Haymarket Square. When policemen attempted to disperse the meeting, a bomb exploded and the police opened fire on the crowd. Seven policemen and four other persons were killed, and more than 100 persons were wounded.
Eight protestors were tried, but no evidence was produced that they had made or thrown the bomb. They were, however, convicted of inciting violence, although no evidence was presented that they knew the bomber, who was never discovered.
Known as the HAYMARKET TRAGEDY, it became the marker of the origin of protests on Labour Day.

The following video narrates the events of Haymarket Tragedy.

A Poem

World Workers, whatever may bind ye,
This day let your work be undone:
Cast the clouds of the winter behind ye,
And come forth and be glad in the sun.

Now again while the green earth rejoices
In the bud and the blossom of May
Lift your hearts up again, and your voices,
And keep merry the World’s Labour Day.

Let the winds lift your banners from far lands
With a message of strife and of hope:
Raise the Maypole aloft with its garlands
That gathers your cause in its scope.

It is writ on each ribbon that flies
That flutters from fair Freedom’s heart:
If still far be the crown and the prize
In its winning may each take a part.

Your cause is the hope of the world,
In your strife is the life of the race,
The workers’ flag Freedom unfurled
Is the veil of the bright future’s face.

Be ye many or few drawn together,
Let your message be clear on this day;
Be ye birds of the spring, of one feather
In this–that ye sing on May-Day.

Of the new life that still lieth hidden,
Though its shadow is cast before;
The new birth of hope that unbidden
Surely comes, as the sea to the shore.

Stand fast, then, Oh Workers, your ground,
Together pull, strong and united:
Link your hands like a chain the world round,
If you will that your hopes be requited.

When the World’s Workers, sisters and brothers,
Shall build, in the new coming years,
A lair house of life–not for others,
For the earth and its fulness is theirs.

We Dance…

God’s the choreographer
The world’s a dance floor
Our lives are the rhythm
Emotions are the music
We are the dancers,
We dance in laughter,
We dance in tears,
We dance in madness,
We dance in fears,
Dancing in our lives awake
With ambitions we tap
And with hope we shake
To replicate our dreams.

The dance is one of the many human experiences which cannot be suppressed. Dancing has existed at all times, and among all peoples and races. The dance is a form of expression given to man just as speech, philosophy, painting or music.

Apart from war, dancing is the chief factor making for social solidarity in primitive life. The value of dance as a method of individual and national education was recognized as civilization became increasingly self-conscious. In the Laws Plato remarked that a good education includes knowing how to dance and sing well.

Quotes:

”Let us read and let us dance –
two amusements that will never do any harm to the world.”
~ Voltaire

Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is not mere translation or abstraction from life; it is life itself.
~Havelock Ellis

Talk about dance? Dance is not something to talk about. Dance is to dance.
~Peter Saint James

When Tibet can, Why can’t We??

As if the fourth Dalai Lama’s great Spiritual and Political leadership wasn’t enough, that now Tibet is being bestowed with another bright brain as its new Prime Minister–the political head, though the Spiritual head’s place stays with Dalai Lama.

The new man was elected through a process of voting from Tibetans all around the world. Dr Lobsang Sangay won with 55% of the votes cast by Tibetans around the world in his favour.Almost 83,400 Tibetan exiles were eligible to vote and more than 49,000 ballots were cast.

The new man is not only a handsome young man of 42 , but a brilliant Harvard University Law academic –that too a Fulbright scholar and Senior Fellow at Harvard Law School .

Born a refugee in a Tibetan settlement in Darjeeling in 1968 and having grown up and educated mostly in Delhi, he has never seen Tibet.

And then like the Dalai Lama he too pledges and holds strong faith in continuing the struggle .’peacefully’ to gain independence for his Homeland Tibet. He remarks:
“If you look at successful non-violent freedom movements led by Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, dialogue with their adversaries has been one of the key factors in making their movements successful. So, yes, we should keep talking to the Chinese government as we can only resolve the issue of Tibet through dialogue and mutual understanding. So far Beijing has maintained their hard line policy and has failed to recognize the moderate and reasonable gestures by His Holiness on his desire to seek ‘genuine autonomy’ for Tibet.”

Just a few weeks ago when Dalai Lama had decided to step down, people all over the world, including me, had been skeptical if they would be able to find an equally forceful and yet peaceful man to pursue the struggle. Apparently their doubts have been laid to rest. Now the time will unfold his abilities as the new ‘Kalon Tripa’ or Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile.

There are three reasons I wrote this blog

First, I am an ardent fan of Dalai Lama and his peaceful policies and his understanding of Religion, God, Love and Compassion. And as a true and sincere leader he decided it was time to step down, despite cries not to. Not only this, he ensured that the new leader was chosen through the democratic process giving up the age old traditions of being chosen by the Priests. Kudos Your Highness !

Secondly, it will be a big cause of concern for the Chinese–now they have another brilliant young mind to deal with–not just an old fashioned religious leader. What political wrestling and bargaining will go on, it will merit a close watch–especially us,( Pakistanis) being best friends of China.

And Lastly but certainly not the least–my heart pains that when a small nation of 145,150 with all it’s citizens scattered in exile–can have the best brains as their Political and Spiritual leaders WHY THE HELL cant we find some brilliant brains within Pakistan ( we are not even under occupation, nor in exile) from among the 180 million to lead our Politics as well as our Religion?

Don’t we have young, competent, sane minded, honest, peace loving, open and secular minded people amongst ourselves to be our Political or Religious Leaders ?

Why does it still remain a far fetched dream in Pakistan after 65 years of independence when Tibetan have made this a reality through their democratic process even in Exile? Why ?

It makes me cry high and loud with deep sorrow, misfortune and anger.

Does it make you weep too??

What a Child with Autism would like you to Know!!

( (Music: World By Five for Fight)

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.

-The hallmark feature of ASD is impaired social interaction.

Children with ASD may fail to respond to their names and often avoid eye contact with other people.

-They have difficulty interpreting what others are thinking or feeling because they can’t understand social cues, such as tone of voice or facial expressions, and don’t watch other people’s faces for clues about appropriate behavior.

They lack empathy.

-Many children with ASD engage in repetitive movements such as rocking and twirling, or in self-abusive behavior such as biting or head-banging.

APRIL is the AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH. So kindly spread the awareness on Autism whichever way you best can.

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake–a dream ballet ( Act 1).

Tchaikovsky’s first ballet, Swan Lake is considered by many to be one of the greatest classical ballets of all time. Its romance and beauty has allowed the classic ballet to mesmorize audiences for more than 100 years. Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (in four Acts) was composed in 1875 as a commission by Vladimir Petrovich Begichev, the intendant of the Russian Imperial Theatres in Moscow. Swan Lake was unsuccessful after its first year of performance. Conductors, dancers and audiences alike thought Tchaikovsky’s music was too complicated and hard to dance too.
It wasn’t until after Tchaikovsky’s death that Swan Lake was revived. Much of the Swan Lake we know of today was a revision by the famous choreographers Petipa and Ivanov.

Plot Summary of Swan Lake:
While hunting, Prince Siegfried sees an amazing swan. As he takes aim to shoot, the swan turns into a beautiful woman. The woman, Odette, tells the prince that she is a princess who has come under the spell of an evil sorcerer. During the day she must be a swan and swim in a lake of tears. At night she is allowed to be a human again. The spell can only be broken if a a virgin prince swears eternal fidelity to her. She tells Prince Siegfried, who happens to be a virgin prince, that if he refuses her she must remain a swan forever.

Prince Siegfried falls madly in love with Odette. However, through a spell by the evil sorcerer, he accidentally proposes to another woman at a party, believing that the woman is really Odette. Princess Odette feels doomed. She threatens to kill herself and throws herself into the lake. The Prince feels terribly sorry and throws himself into the lake with her. In an incredibly touching moment, the two are transformed into lovers in the afterlife.

Act I
Prince Siegfried arrives at his 21st birthday celebration on the palace courtyards to find all of the royal families and townspeople dancing and celebrating, while the young girls are anxiously seeking his attention. During the exquisite celebration, his mother gives him crossbow and informs him that because he is of age now, his marriage will be quickly arranged. Hit with the sudden realization of his future responsibilities, he takes his crossbow and makes haste to the woods with his hunting buddies.

(Other Acts to continue…._
P.S. Have a long time dream to watch this ballet live in theatre !!

Mysticism of Sound –Sufi Inayat Khan

A short biographical video about Sufi Inayat Khan, the Indian musician and mystic who brought Sufism to the West in the early 20th century.

Sufi Inayat’s quotes from his book “Mysticism of Sound”.

“A person does not hear sound only through the ears; he hears sound through every pore of his body. It permeates the entire being, and according to its particular influence either slows or quickens the rhythm of the blood circulation; it either wakens or soothes the nervous system. It arouses a person to greater passions or it calms him by bringing him peace. According to the sound and its influence a certain effect is produced. Sound becomes visible in the form of radiance. This shows that the same energy which goes into the form of sound before being visible is absorbed by the physical body. In that way the physical body recuperates and becomes charged with new magnetism.”

“Life is a symphony, and the action of every person in this life is the playing of his particular part in the music.”

“Love produces harmony and harmony creates beauty. Therefore the chief motto in life is ‘Love, harmony and beauty’. Love in all things and beings the beloved God, in harmony with all in the right understanding, and beautify your life by observing the beauty within and without. By love, harmony and beauty you must turn the whole of life into a single vision of divine glory.”

Ayeda Naqvi’s rendition of Hazrat Inayat Khan’s Urdu poem, “Ajab shaan hai”
(English translation below)

Ajab shaan hai, mast e saut e azl kee
(What a unique glory has the one who is attuned to the sound of eternity)
Na parwah rahay, oos ko thal kee na jal kee
(He is not concerned about the (happenings of the) land or the lake (the earth or water)
Usi sur kay, dhiyaani hain roz e azl say
(It is the same sound that we have all been intoxicated by since the beginning of time)
Kay maaray hooay, hain pia kay charan kay
(It is the same sound that brings us to the feet of the Beloved)
Khudaee karain kar kay dikhlaayain dum main
(Let us reflect Him through our breath and our actions …)
Agar dair main hon kay hon ya haram main
(… Whether we are in the temple or in the mosque)
Inayat sada kay fidayee hain saaray
(Oh Inayat, we are all intoxicated by that which is eternal)
Parhain hain azl say pia kay duwaaray
(And since the beginning of time we have been lying at the doorstep of the Beloved)
Jo Us ka hai waisa hee hona hai laazim
(If you come from Him, you are bound to be like Him)
Mijaz aur haqeeqat hain baahim mulaazim
(The inner and the outer world are, after all, one)
Ajab shaan hai, mast e saut e azl kee
(Oh what a unique glory has the one who is attuned to the sound of eternity)
Inayat karo bus bhee tum aur yeh baat
(Oh Inayat, stop talking about such lofty ideals)
Haqeeqat kay charchay, tumhaaree yeh awqaat
(Look at reality and look at your own lowly nature)
Illahi karam ho, kay zara ho khursheed
(Still, if He wishes, He can turn a speck of dust into sunlight)
Karam ho to ho jayay, sar sabz umeed
(And with His blessings, hope becomes evergreen)
Ajab shaan hai, mast e saut e azl kee
(Oh what a unique glory has the one who is intoxicated by the sound of eternity)
